Start with the state and facts
Adverse possession is a legal doctrine with jurisdiction-specific requirements. Time periods, proof, possession, taxes, documents and procedures can matter differently. This lesson is a research framework, not a statement that any claim qualifies.
Read current primary law
Find the current statute and relevant court decisions through official state sources. Check effective dates, amendments and whether an exception applies to the land or owner. Avoid relying on a single “years required” chart.
Distinguish a claim from title
An assertion of possession is not a deed and does not automatically clear other interests. Ask a licensed attorney about the evidence, notice and court process that could apply to a specific case.
Research without trespassing
Do not enter, occupy, change locks or pay someone who promises that a neglected property is free to claim. Use the doctrine as a subject for legal research and qualified review.
Verify the current source and applicable local requirements before acting.
